Wise And Otherwise: A Salute To Life - Sudha Murty

Human is a mixture of a several components. Many mind-bogging phenomena that occur among us are difficult to reason and understand. Follow the author on her ventures as she comes across different tones of human behavior, trying to piece together the lessons she has learnt from encountering so many people as a social worker, a teacher and a mother.

Some shades of man are truly heartbreaking. They present their own parents as destitute to get them taken care of in old age homes. Opposed to that, an anonymous donor sincerely gives away without expecting anything back, so that somebody in need should not go to bed hungry. Other times, some actions of people bring tears in our eyes - a struggling but courageous widow on her deathbed who thinks of others in need.
These lessons carry the values of honesty, humility, trust and belief in one another and finding happiness in the smallest of things. They highlight the importance of respecting our history, the significant role of teachers in the lives of the citizens of tomorrow and the consequences of jealousy and envy. Some stories encourage us to battle with hope against the difficulties we face in life. Humorous stories about miscommunications and the foolishness of people also occasionally stun the author.

The author accurately hits many of the aspects in today's civilization and their underlying problems -  illiteracy and lack of education among the poor, cultures regarding parents and children, drastic and sudden changes over the past few decades, relationships, and the shortcomings and ignorance of today's generation.

An age-old but relevant issue in the Indian society is the dismaying condition of women. Lack of education and economic independence make them reliant on others and less likely to enjoy their liberties and right to various freedoms. According to the author, the Indian woman is so strong and brave to have thrived in such atrocities and challenging hurdles put forward by societal pressures, and still be able to prosper and grow.

Other than computer science, poverty has been a major subject in the life of the author. Seeing abjectly poor people who do not even have anything to cover their own bodies and impoverished societies destroyed by natural calamities and disasters have always pushed the author to never stop working hard for the dark and gloomy interiors of India.

The writing style tries to replicate storytelling by mouth, which makes the readers immersed in the stories. The simple language makes it furthermore indulging for the readers.

The author loves to interact with the people she meets. She loves to listen to them and is very curious about them - the way they live, their routine and lifestyle. It is a most special ability of the author to be able to immediately connect with their hearts.
